Gurmail Kaur, the late singer’s first wife, revealed details about Amar Singh Chamkila’s passing in a recent interview. On March 8, 1988, Chamkila passed away. He was set to perform at Mehsampur, Punjab, when he and his second wife, singer Amarjot, were assassinated. Gurmail disclosed in an interview earlier this month that word of mouth and the news were how his family members learned about his passing. She further disclosed that she saw his mortal remains when she went to his house.

“Back then, we didn’t have phones. Word-of-mouth and the news were how I learned about the news. First, my parents dispatched someone to corroborate the information. We went to meet them once that man came back and verified the story.

In addition, she disclosed that she had last seen him a few days prior to his shooting. Amarjot was with him, she said, and the women were cooking when she felt something was off. A day before to his passing, we got to know him. It was pouring rain at the time, she recalled.

While watching Amarjot get soaked by the rain, I was in the kitchen. I assumed his face had become black since I could tell it was different. I glanced at his face at different times, and it remained dark,” she uttered in Punjabi. She said, “It was the same black face I was seeing the last time I saw him when I saw his mortal remains.”

Imtiaz Ali recently narrated Chamkila’s narrative on television. The director created a sort of biopic called Amar Singh Chamkila to tell the story of the singer’s life and untimely death. Parineeti Chopra portrayed his wife Amarjot, while Diljit Dosanjh played the role.
