Arvind Kejriwal’s Jail Diet: ED Alleges Mangoes and Sweets to Manipulate Blood Sugar Levels
Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal has been charged by the Enforcement Directorate with purposefully ingesting sugar, sweets, and mangoes with tea in an apparent attempt to raise his blood sugar levels. A Delhi court was considering Kejriwal’s request to be able to see his doctor and have his blood sugar levels regularly checked. The application said that Kejriwal should see his usual physician since his blood sugar levels have been unstable. Kejriwal stated that he must see his physician three times a week via video conference. Special public prosecutor (SPP) Zoheb Hossain objected to the plea, saying, “The person who is claiming to have high diabetes… is having mangoes, having sweets regularly, and having tea with sugar. This is all the basis for seeking bail.”
Hossain argued that Kejriwal planned this alleged purposeful ingestion in order to lay the groundwork for a bail request, pointing to variations in his blood sugar levels. Kejriwal’s attorney, Vivek Jain, challenged the agency’s filing, claiming that the ED’s attorney was entertaining the crowd and making remarks intended for public consumption. Jain also told the court that Kejriwal was going to file a superior application and was withdrawing this one. The court scheduled a hearing for tomorrow after requesting a medical report on Kejriwal’s diet from the jail administration.
Arvind Kejriwal has been detained by the ED at Tihar jail in relation to a money laundering case regarding the expropriation program that has since been revoked. The trial court decided on April 23, 2024, to extend his judicial detention. A Delhi High Court ruling that rejected Kejriwal’s appeal against his ED arrest and subsequent remand in the excise policy issue has been challenged in the Supreme Court.

In the meantime, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court, requesting that the Director General of Prisons be instructed to set up procedures for effective Delhi administration, including permitting Kejriwal to hold video conferences with cabinet ministers and assembly members. The suit further asks the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to issue a directive to stop media outlets from running purportedly sensationalized and misleading headlines about the President’s rule being implemented in Delhi.
