Smriti Irani’s Jibe at Rahul Gandhi Amid Amethi Buzz: ‘Delhi mein hugging, Karnataka mein…

Rahul Gandhi, the senior party leader running from the Wayanad constituency, was singled out by union minister and Bharatiya Janata Party MP Smriti Irani on Friday when she criticized the Congress’s stance in Kerala. When the CPI, a partner of the INDIA bloc, put forth its strongest candidate to fight Rahul Gandhi in Kerala, Smriti Irani aimed at the Congress. Annie Raja, the general secretary of the Communist Party, ran against Rahul Gandhi in the Wayanad constituency of Kerala. It’s a three-way race because the BJP has put its Kerala president, K Surendran, from Wayanad on the ballot.

Smriti Irani made a jab at the Congress at a Karnataka rally when she remarked, “The opposition’s condition is that they are fighting in Wayanad.” Opposition groups on the left are questioning why Rahul Gandhi isn’t running for office in Uttar Pradesh. But Rahul Gandhi is hugged by the same Left when they travel to Delhi for an INDI Alliance conference. In Kerala yesterday, I said, ‘Delhi mein hugging, Kerala mein begging.’ The Union minister remarked, “It is Delhi mein hugging, Kerala mein begging, Karnataka mein thugging,” referring to the predicament the Congress is in in Karnataka.

On Wednesday, Wayanad native Annie Raja submitted her nomination for the Lok Sabha. The Communist Party of India (Marxist), which leads the Left Democratic Front in power in Kerala, is partnered with the CPI. Notwithstanding their alliance within the opposition INDIA bloc, the CPI and the Congress are significant rivals in Kerala, competing against one another with their most qualified candidates.

Uncertainty in Amethi

Rahul Gandhi was the target of Smriti Irani’s jab at him at the same time that the Congress was still debating who would represent it in the old party’s former bastion of Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Gandhi served as the current Member of Parliament for Amethi until Smriti Irani decisively defeated him in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Although Gandhi announced his intention to run for the Wayanad seat, it is yet unclear if he will challenge Irani in the next election.

Robert Vadra, the businessman and husband of Priyanka Gandhi, made a hint earlier this week that he would be the face of the Congress from the Amethi seat and that the people in the constituency expected him to represent them in Parliament. Vadra told the news agency on Thursday, “They want a Gandhi family member back, and they will make sure that person wins by a landslide. They also anticipate that I should represent Amethi if I decide to enter politics and consider running for parliament.”
