MS Dhoni’s Captaincy Handover Criticized Before CSK’s IPL 2024 Opener: ‘Would’ve Made More Sense if Dhoni Had Retired
Just before the 2024 Indian Premier League got underway, MS Dhoni and the Chennai Super Kings thrilled the cricket community by announcing that the five-time champion MS Dhoni’s would be relinquishing his captaincy and giving it to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Despite leading the team to a title last season, Dhoni trusted Gaikwad, who made his CSK debut in 2019, to lead the team this year. This is the second time that Dhoni has given his CSK teammate the captaincy. The renowned batter-wicketkeeper handed up his responsibilities to Ravindra Jadeja two years ago, but the Super Kings struggled on the field, and the move didn’t pay off. As a result, Dhoni assumed leadership halfway through the season, but even he was unable to turn things around.
Given that Dhoni hinted at giving up the captaincy in a private conversation with Gaikwad, it appears that this year’s choice was well-considered. Nevertheless, the announcement shocked both cricket fans and former players, even though it seemed inevitable that the 42-year-old Dhoni would eventually stand up. Nonetheless, Wasim Jaffer expressed dissatisfaction with the call’s scheduling. As the batting coach for the Punjab Kings, the former India opener felt that Dhoni should have retired and not stepped down. Without MS Dhoni, I believe things would have made more sense. He was no longer present, having retired. Any captain’s life would have been a lot simpler with it. It always makes a captain’s job much harder now that MS Dhoni is present, according to Jaffer.
“Whatever decision he makes, Dhoni must either accept it or not. Whether he approves of those choices. We all know that Ruturaj Gaikwad would have become the heir, but you are on your own. However, I believe it would have been much easier if Dhoni hadn’t been around,” Jaffer remarked. Regarding MS Dhoni’s potential playing future in the IPL, no formal statement has been made. But the choice to resign as captain has been made to allow for a seamless handoff.
