Mumbai Indians Sign Kwena Maphaka as Dilshan Madushanka’s Replacement for IPL 2024

For the IPL 2024 season, the Mumbai Indians have announced the signing of Kwena Maphaka, the sensational Under-19 World Cup performer from South Africa, to replace the injured Dilshan Madushanka.

Maphaka, who is just 17 years old, is now among the youngest players to be selected in the IPL as MI continues to identify young, gifted cricket players.

MI secured the talented individual for a basic fee of Rs 50 lakh. He takes Madushanka, the left-arm pacer for Sri Lanka, who is out of the IPL 2024 due to an injury.

At the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, Maphaka made a name for himself by winning the title of “Player of the Tournament” after taking the most wickets of any pacer in the competition’s history—21.

The left-arm fast bowler played a key role in helping South Africa go to the Under-19 World Cup semifinals, where they were defeated by India. Maphaka has participated in the South African Emerging and A teams.

Maphaka will be able to learn from the greatest in the field by sharing a dressing room with cricket legends like India’s Jasprit Bumrah and bowling coach Lasith Malinga.

Kwena Maphaka: Rising Star with a Diverse Sporting Background

Maphaka, who is already well-known for his devastating yorkers and death bowls, as well as his extreme fast bowling, which can reach speeds of up to 140 kph, made his Under-19 debut at the young age of 15. In addition, he has already competed in two U19 World Cups, demonstrating his resilience in trying circumstances.

Maphaka, a senior in high school, is skilled in other sports as well; he has experienced success in hockey and tennis. The renowned bowler Kagiso Rabada and he both attended St. Stithians School, therefore they share a cricket training ground.
