RCB’s Sophie Molineux Stuns with Spectacular Over, Halts DC Momentum in WPL 2024 Final

In the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) final at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, the Delhi Capitals got off to a fast start against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday. Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning, the openers, mounted an assault on the RCB bowlers, including an over of 19 runs against Renuka Thakur, during which the two stitched a 64-run stand as the Indian player approached fifty. But Sophie Molineux wrote a fantasy over, taking three wickets for a single run and leaving Delhi reeling in the blink of an eye.

After the former hit Ellyse Perry for a six and a boundary and finished the powerplay with 61 runs, Verma and Lanning took Delhi to fifty in the fifth over. But Australia’s Molineux ended their brilliant start, taking out Verma on the first ball of the eighth over and then dismissing Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey in consecutive deliveries.

Verma, at forty-four, went on the backfoot for the slog against the tossed-up delivery, hoping for the big shot to take her to fifty, but she holed it out to Wareham at deep mid-wicket. A delivery later, the left-arm spinner removed Capsey, who had preempted the lap sweep and shuffled a considerable distance over, before bowling Rodrigues with a beautiful bit of deceit.

But even though Marizanne Kapp stopped Molineux from getting a hat-trick and went on to get a single in the last ball of the over, the damage had already been done. After seven overs, DC was down to 65 for three from 64 for 0.

Delhi, who are in their second WPL final after losing to the Mumbai Indians the previous year, lost three more wickets for a mere 16 runs, leaving them completely bewildered. While Shreyanka Patil got rid of DC captain Lanning, Asha Sobhana, who had bowled an incredible final over against MI in the eliminator game to help RCB reach their first-ever WPL final, took two wickets.
