RCB Hinting at ‘Bangalore’ Removal in Name Change? Potential Rechristening Marks Shift in IPL Era

RCB Hinting at ‘Bangalore’ Removal in Name Change? Potential Rechristening Marks Shift in IPL Era

The Royal Challengers Bangalore may adopt a new moniker to emulate the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings as they get ready for the 2024 Indian Premier League. If the latest teaser for the squad is any guide, RCB will most likely change Bangalore to Bengaluru in their team name. RCB may be getting a name change, possibly in the hopes that a change in name will result in a change in fortune, even if nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings are the other two of the original eight IPL teams, in addition to RCB, that have never claimed an IPL championship. While the Kings XI Punjab rebranded as the Punjab Kings ahead of the 2021 Indian Premier League, the Delhi Capitals changed their name from the Delhi Daredevils in 2018. Nevertheless, neither squad was successful in winning a championship. RCB, however, would prefer to change the narrative. On March 19, at the RCB unbox event, the announcement is expected to be made.

Embracing the change

Between, the ‘S’ was dropped from the moniker Rising Pune Supergiants, which is now defunct, to simply Rising Pune Supergiant. In terms of RCB, they had remained in Bangalore even after the city’s name was changed to Bengaluru in 2014. However, it appears that the franchise is finally embracing the shift after 14 years.

RCB has never won a championship, yet they have had seasons when they looked invincible. Three times, in 2009, 2011, and 2016, they reached the championship round, but none of them won. RCB has won the wooden spoon twice in the previous ten seasons. Even having two hundreds among Virat Kohli’s 639 runs of excellence, RCB finished sixth in the previous season with 7 victories out of 14 games under Faf du Plessis. Their three-season streak of making the playoffs came to an end as a result of the somewhat disappointing results. But this year, with a new moniker and strategy, RCB would strive to finish at the top of the league and beyond to break their 16-year wait.
