AI models will be created and constructed in India: Rajeev Chandrasekhar

Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar claimed on Monday that the recently launched IndiaAI Mission will aid in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) models that are entirely conceived and developed in the nation. “We are going to create our Indian basic models. The topics of ChatGPT and OpenAI are widely discussed. We anticipate that as a result of India’s AI mission, we will have sovereign AI models that are conceived and built in India, Chandrasekhar said at a press conference. These models will be based on our languages and our own Indian data sets.

He went on to say that certain Western nations that have created AI models have an “advantage.” Speaking at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Chandrasekhar stated, “They have access to this kind of infrastructure, and IndiaAI will build this AI compute infrastructure as part of building digital infrastructure.”

What is the India AI Mission?

The Narendra Modi administration unveiled the national-level initiative on March 7, saying its goal is to “bolster the country’s AI system.” The project comprises multiple components and a total budget outlay of ₹10,372 crore, which will be infused over the next five years. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology lists these as IndiaAI Compute Capacity, IndiaAI Innovation Centre (IAIC), IndiaAI Datasets Platform, IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, IndiaAI FutureSkills, IndiaAI Startup Financing, and Safe & Trusted AI.
