IPL 2024 Second Phase to Maintain Home-and-Away Format in India Amid Lok Sabha Elections

IPL 2024 Second Phase to Maintain Home-and-Away Format in India Amid Lok Sabha Elections

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the T20 World Cup may present logistical hurdles for the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), but Arun Dhumal, the chairman of the IPL Governing Council, is optimistic that the competition would remain home-and-away even into the second phase. Only the first 21 games’ schedule—which runs from March 22 to April 7—has been made public by the BCCI. Dhumal, however, insisted that the tournament will take place in India and that the dates for the remaining games will be disclosed as soon as the elections are more clear.

The entire 2019 Indian Premier League was played in a home-away format, even with the general elections taking place. We can arrange the next IPL phase this time around as well, he said, once the election dates are announced and we are certain of the times and phases of the polls.

Although having home and away games is what we would want, we will examine what we can do if scheduling becomes difficult. The concept is that there must be consistency and that no team should have an advantage over the other. The team should have equal opportunities, he continued. The seven phases of the 2019 IPL took place from April 11 to May 19, coinciding with the elections. The 2019 IPL ran from March 23 to May 12.

A Dual-Phase Challenge Amidst Elections and Global Competitions

IPL 2014, however, took place in two stages. From April 16 to April 30, three locations in the United Arab Emirates hosted the first round of 20 matches. The tournament’s India leg ran from May 2 to June 1, coinciding with the nine-phase polling that took place from April 7 to May 12.

In 2009, the lucrative league took on the task of hosting the tournament during a general election year for the first time, opting to hold all of the matches in South Africa. The T20 World Cup, which starts in the United States and the West Indies on June 1, will also be a competition for the IPL.
