Gujarat Giants Secure First Victory in WPL 2024, Beat RCB by 19 Runs

With a spectacular 19-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Giants ended their four-match losing record and won their first game of the current Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 in Delhi on Wednesday. In a Women’s Premier League match in Delhi, the Gujarat Giants put up a strong show, putting the Royal Challengers Bangalore on notice with a difficult target of 199 for 5. Laura Wolvaardt and the elegant Beth Mooney both displayed their talents.

With RCB needing to win 200 matches, they got off to a dismal start when Ashleigh Gardner trapped Smriti Mandhana for 24 runs, out of play. With Perry back in the dugout for 24 overs, the RCB was reduced to 96 for 4 after losing wickets at regular intervals. Given the target they faced in this match, it was an uphill battle for the squad, since RCB hasn’t been able to post large totals when Mandhana has struggled at the bat in this edition. Every time a batter appeared to be hitting everything on sight, GGT managed to dismiss them. Richa Ghosh, the wicketkeeper batsman, was making runs quickly until he misplayed a ball and was caught by Meghna Singh for 30 off 21.

Explosive Opening Partnership Sets Solid Foundation for Gujarat Giants

The Giants, who had battled in their past matches, had prior seen an unstable opening organization between Mooney (85 not out off 51 balls) and Wolvaardt (76 off 45 balls), who joined to score 140 runs in only 13 overs, laying the foundation for a gigantic aggregate. On the Feroz Shah Kotla pitch, Wolvaardt and Mooney exploited free conveyances during the Powerplay overs, on account of the RCB bowlers’ conflicting play.

The boundaries were loose because left-handed Mooney and right-handed Wolvaardt dominated the half-trackers. Wolvaardt produced strong pulls, while Mooney demonstrated immaculate cover drives.
