AB de Villiers Upset and Disappointed: Links Daniel Vettori’s Involvement to SRH’s Cummins-Markram Captaincy Swap

The dismissal of Aiden Markram from Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captaincy before the 2024 Indian Premier League infuriated legendary Proteas batsman AB de Villiers. For the forthcoming season, SRH, who placed last in the points standings the previous year, made the radical decision to alter their coaching and leadership style. Pat Cummins was chosen as captain and signed by them in the IPL 2024 Players Auction. In August of last year, Daniel Vettori was appointed head coach. Australia’s captain, Cummins, cost a staggering INR 20.5 crore at the IPL auction, making him the second most expensive player in league history. SRH went broke for him. Markram recently guided the franchise’s subsidiary, SunRisers Eastern Cape, to their second consecutive SA20 championship. But in the IPL 2023, SRH finished last under his leadership. De Villiers expressed his disappointment at Markram’s dismissal, but he also acknowledged that SRH made the right choice in selecting Cummins as their captain, who guided Australia to two ICC championships the previous year.

“There’s reason for him (Pat Cummins) to be captain in that team, even though it’s a bit of a surprise to most people, a bit of an upset to me perhaps to see Aiden Markram being moved across and sort of just had to make way for Pat Cummins there, even though Aiden Markram has won back-to-back SA20 tournaments,” De Villiers stated on his YouTube channel. But the ex-RCB player claimed that because SRH was adjusting to a new captain last season, they didn’t give Markram much time. They were only getting used to him as captain there at the SRH, but I think he’s an amazing captain. Thus, it disappoints me, him, and other South African supporters, but whatever the case, if it’s best for the SRH team, then fine,” he continued.

As head coach Daniel Vettori of the SRH is also a member of the Australian coaching staff, the great Proteas batter further demonstrated the connection between the Australian team and the SRH camp.
