Modi Unveils India’s First Underwater Metro Route and Projects Worth ₹15,400 Crore in Kolkata

On March 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his 10-day tour of 12 states and union territories (UTs), inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several projects valued at ₹15,400 crore in Kolkata. In the last five days, he has made two trips to West Bengal.

List of projects PM Modi inaugurated in Kolkata, West Bengal:

  1. The first underwater metro service in India was launched when PM Narendra Modi opened the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade leg of the Kolkata Metro’s East-West track. The 4.8-kilometer East-West Metro route, which will contain the deepest Metro station in India at Howrah—30 meters below ground level—was constructed at an official cost of ₹4,965 crore. Crucial locations, such as Salt Lake Sector V, the IT hub, would be connected with the relief corridor.
  2. The East-West Kolkata Metro corridor’s Howrah Maidan-Esplanade segment is officially opened today, but passenger services won’t start until later, according to Central Railways.
  3. During his visit to Kolkata, the PM highlighted additional rail services to improve pathways to guarantee convenient urban travel. The Taratala-Majerhat Metro segment and the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay portion are two of these.
  4. Agra Metro’s stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar; the Kochi Metro Rail Phase I Extension project (Phase IB); the Pune Metro from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi stretch; and the Duhai-Modinagar (North) section of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor are among the other projects that PM Modi dedicated to the country.
  5. PM Modi is scheduled to speak at a public rally later in the afternoon in Barasat, which is located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, which is home to Sandeshkhali.

PM Modi’s last visit to Bengal

PM Modi spoke at two rallies in Hooghly’s Arambagh and Nadia’s Krishnanagar during his visit to West Bengal last week. He said that the “entire country is seething with anger over the issue” as he attacked the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government for “atrocities on women” in Sandeshkhali. In the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, he also urged people to make sure the TMC loses. In the meantime, Modi also had a “courtesy meeting” with Mamata Banerjee at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata, which the chief minister referred to as such according to tradition.
