Global Outage: Instagram and Facebook Down Worldwide, Meta Rushes to Resolve ‘Log In Again, Change Password’ Issues

After an outage was reported in India and many other parts of the world on Tuesday evening, Facebook and Instagram services were restored. On these two social media sites, users have voiced complaints over difficulties logging in. They had deleted their Instagram and Facebook accounts. Some people had trouble reloading Instagram sites. Also, a lot of people were prompted to reset their passwords. Not long later, YouTube viewers began experiencing the same problem. When using the Instagram and Facebook apps, messages like “Log in again; session expired; couldn’t refresh feed” occurred. On Tuesday, about 8:30 p.m., the disturbances began.

The Facebook and Instagram platforms of Meta Platforms were unavailable to tens of thousands of users on Tuesday, according to the outage tracking website Downdetector.com. According to the website, which tracks outages by compiling status data from multiple sources, including users, there were over 3,00,000 complaints of outages for Facebook and over 20,000 incidents on Instagram. Reuters claims that the WhatsApp Business application programming interface was having problems, as seen by Meta’s status dashboard. About 200 complaints of WhatsApp outages were found on Downdetector, a tool that tracks outages by compiling status updates from various sources, including users. On Tuesday night, however, around ten o’clock, services were resumed.

Meta reacts

“People are experiencing difficulties using our services, as we are aware. “We are working on this right now,” wrote Meta spokesperson Andy Stone in a post on the social media platform X. “Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services,” Stone tweeted after apologizing, and the services were back up and running. We are sorry for any difficulty caused, and we worked fast to find a solution for everyone affected.” Elon Musk, the owner of X (previously Twitter), didn’t hesitate to poke fun at Meta, stating, “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working.”

Netizens fear hacking and cyberattacks.

On the microblogging platform X, many users reported experiencing Facebook and Instagram outages. “Is Meta down or am I being hacked? 😂 My Facebook is also saying “session locked out,” and Instagram isn’t loading,” a user said. “I thought my Facebook and Instagram got hacked for a second,” remarked another. Another user tweeted, “I’m checking Twitter to see if #INSTAGRAM is down again.” “I’ve been scrambling to change passwords three times, thinking I’m racing the hackers like in a movie, lol,” said X user “Fram Freeman.”
