“WPL off to a flyer!” – Twitter responds as MI win the 2024 edition in a thrilling last-ball match against DC

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians (MI) started the 2024 Women’s Chief Association (WPL) in fashion by overcoming the Delhi Capitals (DC) in a last-ball thriller at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday, February 23. Debutant S. Sajana struck a last-ball six off Alice Capsey to total the run chase and start MI’s title defence in style.

MI set a target of 172 runs after selecting to bowl to begin with. DC did not make the brightest of starts, but they developed into the challenge and affability of Alice Capsey’s brilliant 53-ball 75-run knock.

Amid the run chase, MI was battling after losing both Hayley Matthews and Nat Scover-Brunt for moo scores. But the Indian match of Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur responded with fifties to keep the side within the run chase.

DC had one hand in the win after the MI captain was rejected off the penultimate ball of the challenge, with five runs still isolating the two sides.  In any case, S Sajana appeared to have no signs of nerves on her lady trip and pummeled a mammoth six over long-on, driving to wild celebrations within the MI camp.  Fans may not keep their calm after the nail-biting challenge and are enthusiastic to see how the rest of the WPL season unfolds after an exciting start.
