Google Blocks Over 170 Million Policy-Violating Reviews in 2023 with New Machine Learning Algorithm

According to Google, it used its new machine learning (ML) algorithm to filter or eliminate more than 170 million policy-violating reviews from last year’s Maps and Search. This new algorithm assisted the tech giant in eliminating 45% more fraudulent reviews last year compared to the previous one. Over 12 million bogus business profiles were blocked as well, the organization said.

Our new machine learning technology, which we introduced last year, can identify suspicious review trends even more quickly. Google explained in a blog post that it accomplishes this by regularly analyzing longer-term signals, such as when a reviewer posts the same evaluation on several businesses or when a firm experiences an abrupt increase in one or more one- or five-star ratings.

Additionally, the business reported that in 2023, they caught 14 million policy-violating movies, which is 7 million more than the previous year, because to advancements in video moderation algorithms that recognize false overlay phone digits.

More than 1 million fewer attempts than in 2022, business owners were shielded from over 2 million efforts by hackers to claim Business Profiles that did not belong to them. More than 123,000 organizations had their accounts temporarily protected after Google’s systems saw suspicious activity and attempts at exploitation. Google filed a lawsuit against a dishonest actor last year who was attempting to distort services for small businesses and post fictitious reviews on Maps.
